HOK Features Honda Canada:
Three Buildings | One Vision
Honda Canada Head Office *
Honda Canada’s new campus includes a four-storey, 138,000-square-foot head office building; a 71,000-square-foot technical centre for research and development, engineering and training; and a 224,000-square-foot parts distribution centre. Combining the three functions into a single complex has enhanced work efficiencies and communications among the many different divisions. The focus of the campus is the Welcome Centre, which not only displays Honda products but also introduces all the sustainable attributes to associates and visitors.
Whether an automobile or a motorcycle, Honda products are praised for their clean lines. Similarly this complex has simple volumes and machined sharpness and angularity. And just as Honda products are widely affordable, the buildings feature cost-effective materials and straightforward construction techniques.
The HOK/ZAS Architectural Team aligned not only the design with Honda values but also its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. The entire complex has been designed and constructed to high sustainability standards, with the LEED-registered office building aiming for LEED Gold certification. Over 8,000 plants, shrubs and trees have been planted on the 53-acre site. The irrigation system uses only recycled surface water retrieved through a bio-filter system. Water is collected from the roof of the Parts Distribution Centre and stored in an underground cistern for the irrigation of the sports field and landscape plantings. Overall, the office building uses 44% less water for plumbing and 33% less energy than a similar building designed to code.
Honda recognizes that a healthy sustainable workplace enhances the lives of its employees. All employees sit within eight meters of the continuous ribbon windows, maximizing day light views. The long rectangular floor plate is oriented east -west to maximize exposure to the north and south. Thermostats are located throughout the open office to regulate air temperature. Employees control airflow and temperature with individual underfloor air vents.
The award-winning campus is now everything that Honda’s people imagined in their early visioning sessions: Practical, Efficient, and Versatile. For HOK/ZAS that is a mission well accomplished.
