HOK Tops Annual Ranking of Green Design Firms

Architectural design firm emerges as #1 practice on 2009 ENR survey of 'Top 100 Green Design Firms'.

For the second consecutive year, HOK ranks as the greenest design firm on the planet. A new survey published in the July 6, 2009, issue of Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine ranked the global architectural design practice as the firm engaged in the most sustainable work.

The survey is based on revenue for design services generated in 2008 from projects actively seeking certification from major third-party environmental standards or ratings organizations, such as the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification system.

Oxford's King Tower wins prestigious real estate award

Oxford Properties Group demonstrated clear environmental leadership by being the first property manager in Canada to achieve the first multi-tenant LEED EB certification with their MetroCentre, 225 King Street East tower in Toronto. As prime consultant, HOK lead the team that achieved the certification, making the tower a model green commercial building.

Based on Oxford's leadership, the MetroCentre King Street Tower has been awarded a 2008 NAIOP Real Estate Excellence (REX) Award for Green Project of the Year. Now in their eighth year, the REX Awards represent the most prestigious standards of achievement within the office and industrial real estate industry in Greater Toronto.

Jean Canfield site clean-up nets award

HOK is the recipient of the Canadian Urban Institute's 2008 Brownie 'Best Small Project' Award for its Jean Canfield Government of Canada Building, a LEED candidate project in Charlottetown, PEI. The CUI Brownie Awards recognize projects and programs that reflect leadership and innovation in brownfield redevelopment, specifically lands on which industrial or commercial activity took place and may need cleaning before being redeveloped. The Jean Canfield Building, a pilot project for the Government of Canada's sustainability initiative, qualified as a redevelopment project as its site was formerly occupied by a tannery and subsequently a service station. Utilizing the integrated design process, the project team dramatically reduced energy and water usage in the facility.

This project was completed in joint venture with PEI-based architects Bergmark, Guimond, Hammarlund, Jones.

Killbear's leading-edge design wins international award

HOK's Killbear Provincial Park Visitor Centre received the 2008 International Architecture Award, presented by the Chicago Anthenaeum, which honours leading-edge design worldwide.

Killbear is one of five Canadian projects to win this prestigious award for its approach to design, an approach that presents an integrated vision of environmental stewardship. The site's rugged terrain offered HOK's design team inspiration, including a circulation path running through the Centre that mimics the rock plates cascading down to the water, leading visitors through two levels of exhibitions, support spaces and a theatre. Sustainable design features include the use of Georgian Bay as a heating and cooling system, stormwater runoff that maintains wetlands of indigenous plant species, and recycled/recyclable building materials.
