Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP

When Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) decided to move into the top four floors of 250 Howe Street it looked to HOK for its extensive experience with high-profile law offices.

HOK’s work began with a Visioning Session that identified the firm’s two key objectives: to project FMC’s image as trusted, highly ethical business advisors and to attract and retain top talent.

The focus is the existing circular staircase, now opened up to the surrounding views, that connects all four levels. The staircase provides a dramatic transition for clients moving from reception and meeting rooms at Level 20 down to the more informal café and outdoor patio at Level 19. The staircase also encourages communication among all practice areas and employees. Unlike most law firms where knowledge and research are cloistered activities, the Library is located in open space at Levels 19 and 20 around the staircase. Lawyers and support staff share the single café, and coffee bars and lounges are provided at all levels.

The overall neutral colour palette conveys the required sense of solemnity and stability expected by clients, but pops of bold colour inject youthful energy as well as aid in wayfinding. The new 51,700-square-foot offices are LEED-registered, designed to LEED Gold standard and incorporate a wide range of green initiatives that encourage both employees and suppliers to adopt sustainable practices.
